Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) hosted a one-day workshop today on “Sustainable Manufacturing in conjunction with Materials and Manufacturing Panel, Aeronautics Research and Development Board (ARDB). More than 100 participants from 28 different colleges and Institutions participated in it and were actively engaged in lively discussion. The workshop focused on to add the collective knowledge and understanding regarding sustainable manufacturing and also to provide the foundation for a sustainable manufacturing technology roadmap to address business and technical issues and to begin with the process of establishing a collaborative research agenda.
Dr. Maitreyee Nanda, Secretary, AR & DB were present and highlighted the need for sustainable manufacturing. She said, “There is a need to transition to more sustainable materials. R&D is needed to improve current processes for utilizing alternative materials. There is a need to develop new integrated design tools for manufacturing industry that incorporate all relevant aspects of sustainability—including economic, environmental, and social factors. Collaboration between private industry, academia, national laboratories, and other government agencies is essential to addressing identified barriers and achieving R&D goals.”
Prof. S.K.Das, Director, IIT Ropar, divulging more added, “IIT Ropar’s ultimate goal is to establish a common vision for sustainable manufacturing. This workshop is an early step in that process. Recently, IIT Ropar has been declared as National Resource Centre in Manufacturing by Department of Higher Education, GoI. with a focus to prepare online training material on the latest developments in the manufacturing discipline.”
Prof. Harpreet Singh, Dean ICSR &II, IIT Ropar said, “The workshop brought together a common vision for sustainable manufacturing. One result of the workshop is a technology roadmap for sustainable manufacturing methodologies.”
The day witnessed the keynote lectures from Dr. Shailendra Jaiswal, on Frugal Design, and also the Head of the Department Dr. Ekta Singla and the faculty of Department of Mechanical Engineering gave lectures on various topics like Sustainable standards, Sustainable issues in Spark Erosion Based Processes, MQL Machining, Laser in Sustainable Manufacturing, Modulation Assisted Manufacturing.
The workshop ended with a lab visit and demonstration of the central workshop of IIT Ropar.
