A minister who dealt Kandhar hijackers, died at the age of 82

Founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party  and former India’s foreign minister, defence minister finance minister and BJP’s senior leader, Jaswant Singh died today at 6:55 am of a cardiac arrest at Delhi’s Army Hospital where he was admitted in June, the hospital said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted “Jaswant Singh Ji served our nation diligently, first as a soldier and later during his long association with politics. During Atal Ji’s Government, he handled crucial portfolios and left a strong mark in the worlds of finance, defence and external affairs. Saddened by his demise,” the Prime Minister’s tweet read.

A minister who dealt Kandhar hijackers, died at the age of 82.Jaswant Singh, who was from Rajasthan, had served as India’s foreign minister, defence minister and finance minister. He was an officer in the Army in the 1950s and 60s but he later resigned to pursue a career in politics.He was one of India’s longest serving parliamentarians, having been a member of one or the other house almost continuously between 1980 and 2014.

In 1999, Jaswant Singh as India’s then Foreign Minister accompanied onboard the three terrorists, who had been released from Indian prisons-Omar Sheikh , Maulana Masood Azhar (Who later formed Jaish-e-Mohammed) and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar – were arrested for terrorist activities in Kashmir. He was assigned the job to tackle the hijackers, as he had served the Army.

Jaswant Singh incurred the displeasure of his party colleagues when, after the party suffered its second successive defeat in 2009, he circulated a note demanding thorough discussion on the debacle.
