Area under vegetable cultivation is on the rise in Bathinda-DC B Srinivasan

The area under vegetable cultivation is continuously on the rise in district for the past four years. As compared to the previous year’s 3065 hectares, this year too it has increased to 3356 hectares and hence it witnessed an increase of 291 hectares rise in the area of vegetables in the district.

Giving the credit of increase in this area to the Department of Horticulture, Bathinda Deputy Commissioner B.Srinivasan said that the rising area under different vegetables for past four years is an achievement and its credit goes to the officials of the Horticulture Department.

He said that people in the urban and rural areas are regularly made aware of the benefits of growing vegetables in not only agricultural fields but also at the rooftops or small farms of urban areas.

He pointed out that the camps organized by the department, with the help of the district administration proved instrumental in adding up the area of vegetables every year.

Divulging more details about the increase in area under vegetables, Deputy Director of Horticulture Department Dr. Darshan Pal said that awareness camps wherein people are made aware of the advantages of growing vegetables in urban and rural areas are organized every month.

He said that three camps are organized in the month of May this year across the district. Apart from creating awareness about vegetables, farmers were also sensitized about the poor consequences of burning the wheat and paddy stubble in their fields.

He said that the number of people who wish to grow their own vegetables at their rooftops or in small farms too has increased in the district. As per the official data the number of people growing vegetables on rooftops and in small farms is around 4000 in the district.

He said that the total area under vegetables in the district is 8036 hectares out of which maximum area 4680 hectare is under the potatoes, 532 hectare is under the vine crops, 415 hectare is under the root crops, 354 hectare is under onion, 310 hectare is under the green chili, 259 hectare is under the garlic, 288 hectare is under the tomatoes, 252 hectare is under cauliflower, 212 hectare is under the ladyfinger, 190 hectare is under peas, 174 hectare is under brinjal, 162 hectare is under cabbage and 134 hectare is under capsicum in Bathinda district.
