Former Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitely breathed his last in Delhi AIIMS.

Arun Jaitley was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi on August 9 after he complained of weakness and difficulty in breathing. A senior AIIMS doctor had then told the media that Jaitley was admitted to the cardiology department at 10 a.m. “for a medical check-up” and was being monitored by a team comprising an endocrinologist, a nephrologist and a cardiologist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other top BJP leaders had paid Jaitley a visit in the hospital the same day he was admitted to inquire about his condition.

“Arun Jaitely family even contacted the astrologers for his speedy recovery. Govt, family even contacted the consultants, specialist for his treatment” said a senior BJP leader.

Jaitley had been unwell for the past two years. In 2018, Arun Jaitley had to undergo a kidney transplant. Earlier, in 2014, he had undergone bariatric surgery. This was done to bring down his weight that was gained as a result of his long-standing diabetic condition.

Arun Jaitley 28 December 1952 at New Delhi. His father Maharaj Kishen Jaitley was a lawyer and mother Ratan Prabha Jaitley a housewife.He studied at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi from 1957–69.He graduated with a honours degree in commerce, BCom from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi in 1973. He passed his LLB degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in 1977. Jaitley was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student leader at the Delhi University Campus in the seventies and rose to be the President of the Students Union of Delhi University in 1974.

He was an Indian politician and attorney, who was the Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of the Government of India from 2014 to 2019. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Jaitley previously held the cabinet portfolios of Finance, Defence, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice in the Vajpayee government and Narendra Modi government. From 2009 to 2014 he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. He was a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India. Arun Jaitley decided not to join the Modi Cabinet in 2019 due to health issues.
