DC who refused to sign orders is amongst the winner of Baba Farid Award

The Baba Farid Society here  announced the winners of the 20th Baba Farid Award for Honesty and Bhagat Puran Singh Award for Service to Humanity. The society organises the annual Baba Farid Heritage Festival. The awards would be presented on September 23, the concluding day of the five-day festival. Each award carries Rs 1 lakh and a citation.

Former Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Gurdev Singh, who had refused to sign orders to attack Darbar Sahib in June 1984 has been selected for 20th Bhagat Puran Singh Award for Service to Humanity-2019. Before formally launching the attack the Army needed formal signatures from the D.C. of Amritsar; at that time Gurdev Singh was the D.C. and he refused to sign permission/orders to attack Darbar Sahib; as a result he was replaced by Ramesh Inder Singh who gave the permission to attack Darbar Sahib.

Inderjeet Khalsa, chairman of the society, said ,Baba Farid Award for Honesty would be given to B Chandra Shekhar, 1994 batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre. Presently, he is working as IGP, Special Task Force, Patiala Zone.

Tarsem Kapoor, Chairman, Apahaj Ashram, a home for abandoned old aged person in Jalandhar, has also been selected for Bhagat Puran Singh Award for Service to Humanity. Apahaj Ashram, a home for the destitute in Jalandhar, gets 10 old aged persons on an average in a month. Out of total of 150 inmates, including men and women, in the ashram, 120 are those who have either been left by their sons or daughters-in-law.

Inderjeet Singh Khalsa, who was considered one of the best lawyers in criminal cases, turned a spiritual leader after he took over the charge of looking after the holy shrine of Baba Farid, a Sufi saint, in 1969 is known for his selfless service to society.
