Malerkotla-the 23rd district of Punjab is a perfect example of women empowerment.

Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh has formally inaugurated Malerkotla as Punjab’s 23rd district in a virtual event on Monday, the command of the administration and police has been handed over to women officers. It is also an answer to those people who termed Malerkotla a backward area. It is a sign of advancement that women are leading the district.

Razia Sultana, a woman legislator and the local MLA who represent Malerkotla in the Punjab assembly.  She is also holding a key portfolio in the state cabinet. She is the state Transport minister.

Both the civil and police command of the newly formed district is handed over to women officers. While Amrit Kaur Gill IAS ,of 2010-batch ,has been appointed as the first the deputy commissioner and  Kanwardeep Kaur, IPS, is the senior superintendent of police.

The reins of state’s A category Municipal council Malerkotla is in the hands of another woman Nasreen Ashraf.

The block development and panchayat officer (BDPO) of Malerkotla 1& 2 are also looked after by women officers- Bubbljeet Kaur and Amandeep Kaur.

Another woman officer, Harwant Kaur, holds the charge of SP (headquarters).

The Principal of the only Govt College in the area is also a woman- Gurpreet Kaur. Another college KMRD Jain College principal is also a woman- Dr Meena Kumari .

Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan Institute of Advanced Studies in Urdu, Persian and Arabic, Malerkotla, an institute under Punjabi University Patiala is also headed by Rubina Shabnam

Chief Minister of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh had also announced a medical college, a degree college and a women’s police station in Punjab’s only Muslim-dominated town , while inaugurating the district.

District in the hands of women officers and more women officers are expected to join the newly created district.

Pointing out further, the Chief Minister said that initially the sub-divisions of Malerkotla and Ahmedgarh, as well as the sub-tehsil of Amargarh by upgrading it into Sub-Division, would be included in the newly created district. The temporary offices have been set up at the district level and the offices of 12 departments at district level would be made operational soon said Captain Amarinder Singh adding the District Administrative Complex and Sub-Divisional complex would be constructed at fast pace for which Rs. 20 crore has been allotted. He said the formation of Malerkotla as new district would lead to holistic development of the region besides bringing administration at the people’s doorsteps.
