In the past decade, thousands of farmers have committed suicide leaving their families and children helpless in penury .In many cases the wives unable to cope with the tragic loss of their husbands also follow them leaving the children destitute. They have no means of sustainence and the education of their children is the last priority for them. Girls bear the brunt more than the boys and they are unable to lead an honourable life because of dearth of education and unemployability. Some of them are forcibly married off at tender age and some fall prey to insults and to unscrupulous elements of society.

Dr Harsh Charitable Trust has taken over the responsibility of imparting financial aid to girls of such unfortunate families and help them in their school education. The trustees included three such girls in the trust and distributed cheques in the names of school principals so that they can continue their education in good private schools of Punjab.Altogether the trust gave financial aid to 11 girls yesterday and the total number of girls receiving financial aid has gone up to 415.

Dr Gurpal Singh ,Secretary and Dr Harshindar kaur, President of the trust ,noted social activist and internationally renowned women rights champion said that the trust is grateful to their NRI benefactors and it is with their help only that the trust is able to help so many girls. The trust which was started in 2008 and has been instrumental in helping 415 girls in the past decade of its uninterrupted functioning.

When asked about how she ventured into the uncharted territory of helping such girls in their education, she remembered with agony the story of a poor destitute girl who approached her for continuing with her education since her parents were unable to provide for her education and the school chowkidar offered to help her in lieu of favours.

She said that it is the duty of the government to look after the families of farmers who have committed suicides and one time help to such families is not the end of agony for them.NGOs and the state government should take up the cause of imparting free education to girls so that they are capable of sharing the burden of their mothers and can lead honourable lives.
