GNDU academic council took key decisions ; other universities distance learning courses approved

Capt. Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister of Punjab will lay the foundation of Centre for Interfaith Studies building to be constructed at the University campus in the month of March, this was already announced by the Government of India on the 550th Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, said Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University while presiding over the meeting of Academic Council which was held today in the Senate Hall of the University.  Registrar Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon Presented the Agenda. Dean Academic Affairs Prof. S.S. Behl presented vote of thanks.  A large number of members of Academic Council were present.

Approval to new courses in the colleges, discontinuation of few courses and changes in Syllabi was also been discussed in the meeting. Equivalency to various courses has also been approved in the academic council meeting.

The recognition of Master of Computer Application degree passed under Distance Education Mode from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra as equivalent to Master of Computer Application degree of this university and 12 grade examinations passed from various countries which has been received through ICCR under scholarship scheme for admission to higher courses have also been approved in the meeting of academic council.

Degrees at Under Graduate Level, Post Graduate Level & Post graduate diplomas awarded through Open & Distance Learning mode (ODL) by the various statutory Universities/Institutions (within its territorial jurisdiction) in conformity with UGC Specification of Degrees, 2014 and approval given by the UGC-DEB/erstwhile DEC for the particular session be recognized as equivalent with the corresponding Degrees & Post graduate diplomas offered through conventional mode of this University.

The meeting also approved the degree of B.Com (Business Studies) passed through Distance Education Mode from Annamalai University, Annamalai to seek admission in LLB course of this University. The Nutrition related subjects studied in Bachelor of Food Science & Technology (Hons) degree passed from this University be recognized as equivalent with the subject of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (Vocational) studied in B.A./B.Sc. degree of this University is also approved.

The B.Lib. & Information Science & M.Lib & Information Science degrees passed under Distance Education Mode from Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar be recognized as equivalent to B.Lib. & Info. Science & M.Lib & Information Science degree of this University. The meeting also recommended the LLB (Five Years Integrated Course) passed under regular mode from this University be recognized as equivalent to LLB (Three Years Course) of this University.

The meeting recommended that the concerned candidate is eligible to take admission in MBA two years course on the basis of having passed B.Com. degree through Directorate of Distance Education mode (ODL) from University of Jammu, Jammu.

B.Sc. degree passed alongwith subjects of English, Punjabi, Computer Science, Economics, Mathematics/Quantitative Techniquies/or any other subjects as per combination prescribed by the University be recognized at par with B.A. Degree of this University.

While giving the details about Interfaith Study Centre Prof. S.S. Behl said that this project would be the center of research activities on all religions. In this project, a Symphony of Religious Music will also be a main attraction for the tourists of Amritsar. He said that apart from dividing the Interfaith Center into eight departments, a directorate office, a museum and a panorama, a library and a guest house would also be set up. Giving information about eight departments, he said that Division of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Languages; Division of Divine Music; Division of Comparative Religions; Division of Conflict Resolution; Center for Reconstruction of Ancient Musical Instruments; Division of Study on Travels of Guru Nanak Dev Ji; Division of Archives and Division of Theology are included.

Prof. Sandhu said that this year due to COVID-19 much was not done and all attention was to take care of health or so. Despite that we have been able to make some departments to start job-oriented courses & facilities which are serving well.

He said that to shorten the time of Ph.D from 4 year to 3 years we need to change the present system by introducing a new system. In addition to the existing system of thesis submission, one can also opt for monograph submission system for Ph.D. This is mostly followed by most of the universities at international level and in many IITs etc.

Vice-Chancellor also informed the members about the latest developments of the University in various fields.
