Canada , increased its immigration targets to bolster the economy and fill jobs in sectors experiencing shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic led to closed borders and a sharp slowdown in new arrivals, the immigration minister Marco Mendicino said.

The Canadian government’s new priorities were defined on September 23rd during the speech from the throne, which kicked off the new session of Parliament. The throne speech formally underscored Canada’s goal of welcoming more immigrants to maintain its competitive economic standing.

The country is aiming to add 401,000 new permanent residents next year and 411,000 in 2022, an increase of 50,000 compared with the previous targets. The last time Canada attracted more than 400,000 people in one year was in the early 1900s. The figure for 2023 is even higher at 421,000.

Canada closed its borders to most foreigners, including immigrants, in March to try to slow the spread of the coronavirus. In 2019, the Justin Trudeau-led government welcomed over 3,41,000 permanent residents, including 30,000 resettled refugees and over 4,02,000 study permits and 4,04,000 temporary work permits were also issued. The country had hoped to settle 341,000 people in 2020, but through August, it had managed to do so for only 128,425 people.

It also noted that by the early 2030s, Canada’s population growth will rely entirely upon immigration and with many of its major source countries for immigrants facing similar challenges of lower fertility rates and an aging demographic,

India has been the biggest source country since 2017, when it overtook China among PRs. Indian immigrants accounted for one-fourth of the total permanent residencies granted by Canada in 2019, setting a new record. The majority of the admissions, 60%, will be in the economic class, which has been dominated by Indians in recent years.
