Today, Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi declared that”no person will be allowed to remain in service after he/ she attains the age of 58 years. They are blocking the appointment of a young person, who is waiting for his turn to get government job.”

But, the other side of the coin is that Punjab government himself fails to appoint Punjab public service commission (PPSC) Chairman, which has been lying vacant for over more than two months.

Due to this, all examinations and interview schedules have been badly affected. No new posts were advertised by the state government. Thousands of aspiring youth of the state are crossing the prescribed age limit for jobs every day.

As per the PPSC constitution, the commission cannot hold the exam without a chairman. The exams have already been postponed more than twice, with lakhs of youth preparing for it. Even the successful PCS candidates are awaiting their induction into the job. Also, thousands of candidates are desperate as they are waiting for their examinations, interviews of junior engineer, veterinary officer, school principal, assistant professor ,SDO’s and other posts which the PPSC had advertised for. Some departments are waiting for the joining of the chairman, and were ready to advertise their post, after which the selection process will begin.

Even AAP MLA and youth wing state president Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer had said by not filling this vacant post, the government is cheating lakhs of talented aspiring youths. Hayer said more than 1 lakh applicants for various jobs besides the successful candidates in the Punjab Civil Services are in a fix as the working of the PPSC has come to a standstill in the absence of the appointment of the chairman.

Capt Amarinder Singh led government has appointed Lt Gen Surinder Singh (retd), 60, former GOC-in-C of Western Command, as the chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission, in August 2019 and retired on July 16, 2021 after completing his tenure.

When contacted leader of opposition and AAP MLA Harpal Singh Cheema, he said “ we are pushing for early appointment and hopefully, the new chairman will be announced, soon.” Leader of opposition is also a member of the selection committee.

Sources say that former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh has put his best efforts to select an in-service IPS officer, before leaving his office. He had shortlisted three officers. Out of the three names, B K Uppal, the Chief Director of State Vigilance Bureau, was at the top. The other two candidates were Lt Gen I S Ghuman (retd), a former Army Commander Central Command, and J S Powar, a former director general of National Academy of Audits and Accounts.
