Hospital management should be part of medical education training-Dr Bhullar

The medical experts apart from their professional training in medical colleges, should also be taught hospital management for smooth running of the hospital administration and management while dealing with patients for treatment and care. Hospital administration in itself is a complete subject and expertise, and should be made part of the undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. With the passage of time, not only the patient care and treatment but also smooth running of the hospital affairs on administrative and hospital management aspects, are now the duties of the medical professionals as managers for which they must be properly trained.
These views were expressed by Dr. DS Bhullar (National Fellowship Awardee – IAFM) senior forensic medicine expert and acting head of the department of Forensic Medicine of Government Medical College Patiala during his speech as Guest Lecture on Medico-Legal Aspects of Hospital Management delivered during the Mid-Year CME Programme of Punjab Academy of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology in Kalpna Chawla Government Medical College Karnal.

He said patients coming to hospitals for treatment are like guests of the hospital according to experts and, while in hospital they should be treated with dignity and honour which we give to our guests and in Indian culture, guests are supposed to be like God. Patient Care, education / training of doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, prevention of diseases, health promotion, research, health education to community and rehabilitation are the other important functions of a hospital apart from treatment of patients.
Deficiency in any kind of service during treatment, negligence in service and hospital mishaps during treatment are some of the potential causes which may involve the hospital administration in litigation’s but trained medical staff can easily avoid such administrative errors.
