State transport department is going to establish 6 automotive testing stations (ATS) in Punjab, for the inspection of vehicles in a scientific manner.

As per the Ravinder Singh Gill of state transport department and who is the nodal officer of this project said “every commercial vehicle has to get a fitness certificate after every two years. These 6 automotive testing stations (ATS), when establish, will check the fitness of the commercial vehicle. Theses ATS are coming up at Batala, Patiala, Ludhiana, Faridkot, Ropar and Barnala. Punjab government is going to establish these stations, at its own”

Gill added that “one authorised testing station is nearing in its completion in Kapurthala at a cost of Rs 14.00 plus crore , established by the union  ministry, in its pilot project,  for the inspection of vehicles in a scientific manner.

As per information the work at Kapurthala is being done by Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) with the capacity to handle 20,000 Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) and 13,000 Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV).

Gill further informed that the department, after doing the survey finalized these 6 locations, across Punjab. The Batala ATS would serve the transporters of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Pathankot districts. Patiala ATS would serve the transporters of Patiala and Fatehgarh sahib districts. Due to required number of transporters already registered in Ludhiana , so Ludhiana ATS would look after the Ludhiana district only. Likewise Faridkot ATS would serve the transporters of Faridkot, Moga, Muktsar, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts. Similarly Ropar ATS would cater the needs of SAS Nagar, Ropar and Nawanshahr area. Barnala ATS would look after the Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda and Mansa.

On, how it will work Gill explained that “in this ATS, when a vehicle will enter, the inspector will check the related documents and generate the work order. Then the authorized person will do the emission test, speedometer test, visual inspection external, roller brake test, headlamp test along with other mandatory tests and generate the test report”

As per the information the state transport department has earlier floated the tenders, but didn’t get the response as the conditions were very hard. But now again, with some relaxation in the conditions, the tender is again floated.

As per the main requirement ,the vendor must have at least 4 acres of land in these cities and can take the additional land on lease for parking, so as to prevent vehicles coming to the station from being stationed/ parked on public road.
