MLA assault case-BJP failed to lodge formal complaint; Muktsar police arrested main protest organizers

Even after more than a week’s time, BJP failed to lodge a formal complaint with the Sri Muktsar sahib district police in the assault and violation of the dignity of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Abohar Arun Narang, on March 27. Till date the BJP leaders had only recorded their statement with the police. The same is confirmed by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muktsar D Sudarvizhi.

Muktsar Sahib police had lodged a criminal case under sections 307, 353, 186, 188, 332, 323, 342, 506, 148 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Police Station City Malout, on the complaint of superintendent of police (SP) HQ Sri Muktsar Sahib, Gurmail Singh.

Meanwhile, the Muktsar Police on Monday, arrested five more persons found involved in the assault and violation of the dignity of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Abohar Arun Narang. MLA Narang, who was in Malout in connection with the press conference, was gheraoed and assaulted by the agitating farmers of BKU Sidhupur on March 27.

Lakhanpal Sharma, Block President of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU Sidhupur), who was the main leader and organiser of the protest at Malout was among the five persons arrested by the Malout police. Other four arrested have been identified as Jasmel Singh alias Nikka, and Sandip Singh, both from village Alamwala; Kuldip Singh from village Enna Khera and Kulwinder Singh from village Dannewala.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Muktsar D Sudarvizhi said that as on date the police had arrested as many as 30 persons found involved in the case.

Apart from arresting the BKU’s Block President Lakhanpal Sharma, Sukhdev Singh from village Bura Gujjar, District President BKU Sidhupur, Nirmal Singh from village Jasseana, General Secretary and Nanak Singh from village Fakarsar, Treasurer, were among the main leaders who have already been arrested by the Police, said the Police Spokesperson.

She said that the Police have traced all the accused persons after meticulous scanning of the video footage of the incident and on the basis of statements of the complainants.

Divulging about the roles of persons already arrested in the case, the Police Spokesperson said that Baljit Singh Midha was responsible for splashing black ink on the MLA while Kuldeep Singh and Mandeep Singh were found involved in tearing-off of his shirt. She said that accused persons, including Kulwinder Singh, Sandeep and Jasmail Singh were seen giving beatings to the MLA during the protest.
