Modi College celebrates Mother Tongue Day

Post-graduate department of Punjabi of Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala celebrated Mother-Tongue Day by organising a lecture on the topic of ‘Punjabi Bhasha: Samkaali Parsangikta ate Chonautian’ here today. Dr.Jagbeer Singh,former professor and head,Punjabi Department,Delhi University,Delhi was the expert speaker on the occasion. Principal Dr.Khushvinder Kumar welcomed the guest speaker and said that mother tongue was the central point for social and personal life of all human beings and played an important role in the all round development of the personality of a man.

Dr.Jagbeer singh talked about the relevance of the mother tongue, contemporary issues related to the mother tongue and attitude of new generation towards it. He said that the land of Punjab is the cradle of civilization where Rigved and Mahabharta were written by our RISHI-MUNIES. These epics should not be viewed with the narrow vision of fanaticism.

Dr.Gurdeep Singh Sandhu head, department of Punjabi introduced the speaker to the audience. He said that language should not be confined to the medium of communication. It should be expanded to make the people more employable. A Poster Exhibition depicting various aspects of language was also inaugurated on the occasion. Prof. Mrs. Shailendra Sidhu, Prof. Ved Parkash Sharma and Dr. Rupinder Sharma acted as judges for the exhibition. Damini Pathania and Gurfateh Singh stood first in the competition and Harsukhpawan kaur stood second. Damanjot kaur and Harshdeep stood third and Jasmeet Kaur and Navneet Kaur stood fourth in the competition.

Dr. Manjeet Kaur presented the vote of thanks. Dr. Davinder Singh conducted the stage. Prof. Nirmal singh, Prof. Mrs. Shailendra Sidhu, Prof. Ved Parkash Sharma,  Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Dr. Ajit Kumar, Dr Kuldeep Singh and all the members of the department of Punjabi were present on the occasion. Large number of students participated in the program.
