National Conference concluded Modi College Patiala

UGC Sponsored two day National Conference on Recent Advances in Chemical, Biological and Environmental Sciences (RACES-2018) concluded here today. Prof. (Dr.) Susheel Mittal, Dept. of Chemistry, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala and Fellow, Royal Society of Chemistry, England presided over the Valedictory Session of the 9th National Conference on ‘Recent Advances in Chemical, Biological and Environmental Sciences’. He emphasized that the college is doing a great job in organizing this conference regularly and such initiatives ignite the minds of young students for socially relevant quality research.

Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar welcomed the guests and delegates. He appealed to the young research scholars to concentrate on the problems of their social surroundings while doing research work and make it related to real life situations.

In the third technical session, Prof. (Dr.) Anil K. Sharma, Head, Dept. of Biotechnology, M M Deemed to be University, Mullana in his talk focused on use of microbes in bio-remediation of heavy metals and pesticides. Prof. (Dr.) Narinder Singh, Dept. of Chemistry, IIT Ropar spoke about design and synthesis of chemo-sensors useful for environmental and biological samples.

In the fourth technical session, Prof. (Dr.) Gulshan Bansal, Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research, Punjabi University, Patiala focused on quality control and stability of herbal drugs and emphasized all herbal products are not always harmless, so we must use them with caution. Dr. Balwinder Singh Sooch, Dept. of Biotechnology, Punjabi University, Patiala delved into the recent developments in legal protection of biological inventions.

Many budding researchers belonging to various sub-disciplines of science gave their presentations in the young scientist category which drew positive response from all the delegates. Young Scientist Awards were awarded to Ms. Rohini in Chemical Sciences, Ms. Manpreet Kaur in Biological Sciences and Ms. Megha Jain in Material Sciences.

Dr. Ravi Kumar, Dayal Singh College, Karnal got 1st prize, while Nitika Mor, Dept of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra bagged the 2nd prize in the Poster Presentation in Chemical Sciences. In Biosciences and Environmental Sciences poster categories Harpreet Kaur, Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepur got 1st position and Chetna Ahuja, Dept of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala was declared second. In Material Sciences poster presentation category Palwinder Singh, Dept. of Basic and Applied Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala got 1st prize.

Prof. Surindra Lal, Former Principal and Member of the Management said that a true research scholar never complains of the scarcity of resources to pursue quality research. He also stressed upon the need to inculcate scientific temperament among young minds. Dr. Rajeev Sharma, Coordinator of the conference presented a brief report of the conference. Dr. Ashwani Sharma, coordinator of the conference thanked the guests, delegates and the organizing teachers of the conference. Dr. Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Kuldeep Kumar worked tirelessly for the success of the conference.
