One child dead, 3 injured in blast at Rajpura

Today a blast occurred in a house in Santnagar locality in village Jandauli on the outskirts of Rajpura, in Patiala district. As per information, four children were injured in the blast. The age of all is said to be between 6 and 12 years. Later one girl named Manpreet kaur succumbed to her injuries and died. She is said be of around 10-11 years. While the injured have been identified as Krishna, Gurpreet Singh and Pallavi.

The three injured children were referred to Govt. Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. As per available information two of them were referred to PGI Chandigarh in critical condition. The explosion was so strong that all the ceilings adjoining the room were blown away. According to sources, the blast was caused by firecrackers, in the house of one Krishan kumar.

Police, district administrative officers, sarpanch of the village reached at the spot. Later a team from Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) also called in, to investigate the cause of blast.

“As per preliminary reports, the owner of the house Krishna Kumar and his wife were out of their house at the time of the incident. There were only four children in the house” said an officer investigating the incident.

“Earlier we thought it’s a cylinder blast, but on reaching the spot, we came to that an illegal fire crackers were made, reshaped Villagers informed the fire brigade and it reaches in time” said an eyewitness.

Police officials said forensic teams have collected samples from the mishap site. “We are recording the statements of the injured, their relatives and neighbours. It appears that the family had stored firecrackers and its raw material illegally in the house.”

Earlier in 2017, four days before Diwali, a 13-year-old girl was killed after an explosion in Rajpura’s Sorgir Basti during the manufacture of illegal firecrackers in the area. Similarly, in December 2017, an explosion occurred at an illegal firecracker factory in Mirch Mandi area of Rajpura, in which a 35-year-old man died on the spot, while four others were injured.
