Seminar on climate action,sustainable development organized at GNDU

The Centre for Environment Education (CEE), supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ)-India, and in partnership with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, is organising a series of 16 lecture-cum-seminar events to promote dialogue for the exchange of knowledge and experiences on climate action and sustainable development. The lecture series, “We4Climate: Popular Lecture Series on Climate Change and Sustainable Development” is part of the second phase of the Indo-German initiative, Climate Change Adaptation in Rural Areas of India (CCA-RAI). These events are open to a diverse group of stakeholders including students, researchers, policymakers, academicians, NGO representatives, practitioners and other interested persons. The lecture series involve an interactive exchange of knowledge with an introductory expert session followed by thematic breakout group discussions.

A lecture event for the State of Punjab was organised at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. The university’s Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences was the local organising partner for this event.

Raman Mehta, Policy Head of the Vasudha Foundation delivered the Keynote Address, with Dr. S. S. Ladhar, Additional Director (Environment), PSCST delivering the special address. Prof. (Dr.) Narpinder Singh, Director (Research), GNDU Amritsar who was Chief Guest, delivered his presidential address. Three separate discussion groups of participants formulated their recommendations on the role of government, NGOs, research organizations, youth, and society in responding to the challenges of climate change. On behalf of GIZ, Ishupinder Kaur introduced the project, and Dr Rupali Bal from Punjab Council also spoke on the occasion.

From the Dept of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Dr M S Bhatti gave the welcome address, Dr Adarsh Pal Vig performed local coordination and gave the vote of thanks, Prof Avinash Nagpal gave the concluding remarks, while Dr Rajinder Kaur did the anchoring and stage conduct. The parallel discussion sessions were moderated and assisted by Gursher Singh from Kheti Virasat Mission, Prof Amarjeet Singh Soodan, Prof Saroj Arora, Dr Jatinder Kaur, Dr Kiran Dhami and Prof Satwinderjit Kaur all from the Department.
