Prof. A.K. Thukral, former Director Research, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental Sciences presided over the inaugural session. Prof. Thukral in his inaugural address shed light on the paramount significance of this discipline for all the disciplines. He opined that data collection, its analysis and correct interpretation are vital components for research, regardless of the discipline one is engaged in. Expressing his deep concern over the lack of quality research in the country, he said that India, despite being one of the largest producers of doctorates in the world, the present status of research in the country leaves much to be desired.

Seeking reasons for this dismal scenario, he emphasized that sufficient incentives for the quality research are lacking bitterly in our country. The corporate houses of the country need to rise to the occasion and sponsor quality research in the various domains instead of looking only for the commercial gains, he stressed. Concluding his motivating, inspirational inaugural address, he exhorted the teaching fraternity at large to act as a role model for the society in order to stem the deterioration, creeping in very fast in the various walks of life.
