White coat and oath taking ceremony for MBBS students at AIIMS Bathinda

“Having entered, thy speech, mind, intellect and senses shall be entirely devoted to no other thought than that of being helpful to the patient and of things concerning only him….”, the professional oath was taken by the MBBS students from 2020 batch of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda.

The MBBS students for 2020 batch were joined from various parts of this country on the 1st day of this new year 2021 and have undergone various basic orientation training and foundation course for last 2 weeks organised by Center of Medical Education and Training (CMET), AIIMS, Bathinda. The orientation programme was started on day one with COVID-19 safety and preventive measures followed on successive days covered with various topics such as first aid, basic life-saving resuscitation skills, vital signs, professional etiquette and ethics, doctor-patient relationship, time management, self-directive learning and personal health aspects such as stress management, yoga, care of eyes, sleeping habits and prevention of addiction.

The last day of the course has been crowned with “White coat ceremony”, the white coats were presented to the students by the honorable Executive Director of AIIMS Bathinda, Professor Dr. Dinesh Kumar Singh and they recited the professional oath. This is the first white coat and oath taking ceremony after the medical college started inside the campus of AIIMS, Bathinda.

The Executive Director of AIIMS Bathinda, Professor Dr. Dinesh Kumar Singh congratulated and welcomed all the students. He mentioned this 2020 MBBS batch as most special one in history as they entered into the course after witnessing the COVID-19 pandemic, knowing the importance of this noble profession to the society.  He asked to the students to pledge their self to not allow any agitation among the public towards this noble profession by servicing responsibly in any challenging situations.

The Dean of the institute, Col. Dr. Satish Gupta welcomed all the students and discussed the origin and importance of white coat and stated that white coat will give identity, confidence, authority, respect to doctors and trust among patients which further leads to healthy patient-doctor relationship. He added that wearing white coat is very empowering indeed, but, certainly, it will give the students more challenging responsibilities. He congratulated the students and their parents for their excellent choice and assured them that the Institute will make their head high.

The ceremony included all faculty members from different departments and team of CMET Prof. Akhilesh Pathak, Dr. Navita Aggarwal, Dr. Tarun Goyal, Dr Madhur Verma, Dr. Shailendra Rana, Dr. Bharat Udey, Dr. Abhinav Kanwal, Dr. Rattan Singh, Dr. Sivanantham K, Dr. Jyoti Sharma, Dr. Balpreet Kaur,and Dr. Meena Mirdha. The ceremony was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. Ajay Kumar.
