NZCC staged Bhagat Singh Di Kahani Durga Bhabhi Ki Jawani

North Zone  Cultural Centre Patiala Ministry of Culture, Government of India is organizing the Punjab Natya Mahaotsav from 4^th  to 14^th  September at Kalidasa Auditorium Virsa Vihar Kendra, Patiala.

On the Tenth day of the festival, the play “Bhagat Singh Di Kahani Durga Bhabhi Ki Jawani”  was staged by Theatre Arts, Chandigarh. The play was written by Piyush Mishra, Sagar Sarhadi and  Davinder Daman and Directed by Rajiv Mehta .

 

The play depicts the life of Durgawati Devi (Durga Bhabhi), who was a great Indian Woman Revolutionary and freedom fighter who actively participated in Armed Revaluation against the Ruling British-Raj . She was married to Bhagwati Charan Vohra, who was also a active member of  “Hindustan Social Republic Association” (HSRA) OR HRA . All the members of HSRA referred to her as ‘Durga Bhabhi’  and highly respected because of her role and commitments towards freedom struggle. Ever Since Bhagat Singh joined HSRA till his death, Durga Bhabhi was associated with revolutionary movement for the freedom of the country . As such she was the best judge of Bhagat Singh’s life, about his revolutionary ways, thoughts  and his own legacy to encourage Indian people towards Indian Freedom struggle .Infect Bhagat Singh could have easily got escape from British Government but he chooses the way of scarifying his life , so that the movement of freedom struggle may gain massive momentum. Durga Bhabhi also accompanied him on train journey in which Bhagat Singh (ID changed his disguise after the Saunders Killing). On 9^th October 1930 , Durga Bhabhi opened fire on Punjab-Governor Lord Halley but unfortunately he escaped but many of his associates died and his officer Taylor was wounded . As such Durga Bhabhi was the most appropriate person to describe Bhagat Singh’s , whole life , his ideology and about freedom struggle .

The duration of the play was 1 hour & 35 minutes and has 17 Artists on stage. It was for the first time that the character of Durga Bhabhi was shown on the stage as a central character of the play .

The cast included – Saudammi Kapoor as Durga Bhabhi , Yogesh Arora as Bhagat Singh , Munish Kapoor as Sukhdev , Yogesh kumar as Rajguru , Ramesh Bhardwaj as Batukeshwar Dutt , Bhupinder Singh Sandhu as Chander Shekhar Azad , Rajiv Mehta as British-Judge, Satpal Singh as Jailer (Namberdar)  ,Gaurav Sharma as Ashfaq Ulla Khan , Asha Saklani as Mother of Bhagat Singh , Malkiat Singh as Bhagwati Charan Vohra , Amit Kumar as Shiv kumar ,Music & Video by Harkirat Pal Singh , Set-Designed by Gaurav Sharma , Costumes by Anjali Sharma , lights by Chetan ,  On Back-Stage – Babloo , Sukhwinder Kaur, Manisha & Reena.
