Punjabi University organized 51st session of Punjab History conference

Under the guidance of worthy Vice-Chancellor Professor B.S. Ghuman, The Department of Punjab Historical Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala organized 51st session of Punjab History conference (15-17 March, 2019) in the Senate Hall. It was based on LifeTeachings and Legacy of Guru Nanak.

This Conference is a part of programmes planned by Punjabi University and Punjab Government to celebrate 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Dr. B.S. Ghuman in his presidential remarks discussed the philosophy of Guru Nanak in a very simple and clear words. He said that the ideology of Guru Nanak was not based on particular religion or idea. He suggested that experts from the different disciplines should come forward with varied perspectives to find solutions of social, economic, political and religious problems in order to re-built a nation that Nanak wanted.

Well known Scholar, Professor Rattan Singh Jaggi, Formerly Head, Punjabi Literary Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala delivered inaugural address. He discussed about the Udasis of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Professor Jaggi depicted that he was a Yug Purush and felt dearth of true human being. He put before the world a different perspective which was unique in itself.

Professor Aditya Mukherjee, the General President of the conference discussed his views on Idea of India. He said that Indian notion of nationalism is totally different from European countries. It is based on Sovereignty, democracy and pro-poor orientation. He also discussed about partition of India and its after effects. Professor Mukherjee opined that migration abroad has become a very serious issue and we should turn our faces towards our country.

Guest of honour Dharam Singh Goraya, who came from U.S.A. especially to attend this conference, discussed about his research works.

Dr. Balwinderjit Kaur Bhatti, Director, Punjab History Conference welcomed the audience and explained in very compact manner about the department and theme of the conference. Dr. B.S. Ghuman honoured General President Professor Aditya Mukherjee, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Sectional Presidents of Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Punjabi Sessions namely Dr. R. Mahalakshmi (Professor), Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Dr. Veena Sachdeva (Professor), Department of Hisotry, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Dr. Amarjit Singh (Professor), Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra; Dr. Jaspal Kaur Kaang (Professor), Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He also honoured S. Dharam Singh Goraya and Professor Rattan Singh Jaggi. Apart from this he also honoured Prof. Sulakhan Singh, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar who delivered Sita Ram Kohli Memorial Lecture.
